Transaction Categories

Create Category Groups

Category groups help organize related categories together:

1. Click the "New Group" button
2. Enter a group name (e.g., "Expenses", "Income", "Transfers")
3. Click "Save Group"

Create Categories

Create categories to classify your transactions:

1. Click the "New Category" button
2. If you want the category in a group, first select or create the group
3. Enter a category name (e.g., "Groceries", "Utilities", "Salary")
4. Choose a color to visually identify the category
5. Optionally, mark the category as "Excluded from Analytics" if it shouldn't appear in spending analysis
6. Click "Save Category"

Edit Categories and Groups

You can modify existing categories and groups:

• Edit Group: Click the edit icon (✏️) next to a group name to change its name
• Edit Category: Click the edit icon next to a category to change its name, color, group, or analytics settings
• Move Categories: When editing a category, you can change which group it belongs to

Delete Categories and Groups

Remove categories or groups you no longer need:

• Delete Category: Click the delete icon (🗑️) next to a category. Transactions using this category will become uncategorised.
• Delete Group: Click the delete icon next to a group. You can only delete groups that have no categories in them.

Use Quick Add Buttons

Quick add buttons help you create categories more efficiently:

• Click "Add Category" on a group header to create a new category in that group
• The category form will be pre-populated with the selected group
• This saves time when creating multiple categories in the same group

Export and Import Categories

Use the hamburger menu (☰) to manage your category data:

• Export Data: Download your categories and groups as CSV or JSON, or create a full backup
• Import Data: Restore categories from a backup file
• Clear All Data: Remove all categories and groups (use with caution)

Organize Your View

Use the interface features to manage your categories:

• Expand/Collapse Groups: Click on group headers to show or hide categories within that group
• View Statistics: See how many categories and groups you have at the top of the page
• Search: Use the search box to quickly find specific categories or groups
